*Rare* Hermès Kelly 32 Retourné Dalmatian White Buffalo Skipper Palladium Hardware 2001 VIP

Dalmatian is among Hermès’ most distinctive and elusive leather treatments. Produced only for a limited period between 2001 and 2010, the finish was created through a specialized dyeing process applied to Buffalo Skipper leather. Pigment settles irregularly within the pronounced grain, forming the signature spotted effect. Because the pattern develops organically, each bag is entirely unique.
Buffalo Skipper was originally developed by Hermès for nautical use and is valued for its water resistance, durability, and deeply textured grain. These qualities made it particularly well suited to the Dalmatian treatment. Both the leather and finish have since been discontinued, with surviving Dalmatian pieces becoming increasingly valuable both in terms of price and collectibility.
The Kelly 32 Retourné balances the relaxed character of its softly constructed silhouette with a practical, highly wearable size. Palladium-plated hardware complements the monochromatic exterior without competing with the leather’s dramatic pattern.
Collector's Note:
Dalmatian belongs to a small group of experimental Hermès finishes produced in limited quantities and never reintroduced. Although the Kelly 35 is the size most commonly encountered, examples in the Kelly 32 are considerably harder to find. Its more compact proportions make the 32 especially appealing to collectors seeking both rarity and everyday wearability. The white-ground version is also less frequently seen than several of the brighter color variations.
Resale Note:
Discontinued Hermès finishes tend to follow a different market trajectory from the house’s permanent leathers. With no new supply entering the market, Dalmatian pieces are increasingly sought after by collectors of archival materials and unusual craftsmanship. Buffalo Skipper’s inherent resilience has also allowed many surviving examples to retain their structure remarkably well for their age.
